Dans 'L'Interprétation des rêves' ('Die Traumdeutung', 1899), Sigmund Freud s'applique à lui-même la méthode d'analyse qu'il préconise : parmi les cent soixante rêves cités, un bon tiers est de lui. Dans le récit d'un rêve intitulé L'injection faite à irma, on lit des choses étonnantes. Plus il s'enfonce dans l'analyse de sa propre matière onirique, plus il se confronte aux limites de sa méthode qu'il désigne, dans une petite note, par une étrange formule : l'ombilic du rêve. Cet ouvrage se veut une invitation à sonder les limites de notre conscience à travers l'imaginaire graphique de quatre artistes d'exception. Il met en regard dessins et gravures de Félicien Rops (1833-1898), Max Klinger (1857-1920), Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) et Armand Simon (1906-1981), dont les œuvres révèlent des liens et des préoccupations communes.
