This article reviews the evidence for the enhancement of healthy cognitive ageing through active participation in the arts, with the emphasis on the art of acting for theatre and film. Relatively few evidence-based arts interventions for older adults have been reported in the scientific literature, and only one has been investigated over a number of years through the execution of a series of linked studies. The intervention described here is novel, practical, effective, enjoyable, and has consistently resulted in significant increases on standard measures of memory, problem-solving, creativity, and comprehension. Furthermore, it takes only four weeks to administer and is highly cost-effectice, requiring but one instructor and no expensive equipment
