"Die Idee zu dieser Arbeit ist Ende 1984 entstanden, als Ronald Reagan -- Symbolfigur für ein konservatives und selbstbewußtes Amerika -- gerade in seine zweite Amtsperiode gewählt wurde. Es sollte ursprünglich darum gehen, den amerikanischen Neokonservatismus generell in seinen historischen Entstehungszusammenhängen und gesellschaftlichen Leitbildern zu erklären. Am John F. Kennedy-Institut (Berlin) wurde 1985 dann das Dissertationsthema konkretisiert und konzeptionalisiert. Auch die Grundzüge der methodischen Vorgehensweise -- eine Kombination aus theoretischer, qualitativer und quantitativer Analyse -- wurden während dieser Zeit erarbeitet. Eine weitere, wichtige Station war Washington D.C., wo ich 1986 bei der Federal Election Commission (FEC), in der Library of Congress und bei verschiedenen Komitees und Instituten Daten und Sekundärliteratur sammelte sowie Interviews mit Repräsentanten des National Conservative Political Action Committee (NCPAC), des Free Congress Political Action Committee und des Gun Owners of America Campaign Committee (GOACC) durchführen konnte. Das Datenmaterial wurde 1987 im Institut für ökonomische und soziologische Analyse politischer Systeme sowie im Zentralinstitut für sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung (beides Berlin) ausgewertet." -- "The idea for this work came at the end of 1984, when Ronald Reagan -- symbolic figure for a conservative and self-confident America -- was just elected to his second term. The original idea was to explain American neo-conservatism in general in its historical origins and social models. At the John F. Kennedy Institute (Berlin), the topic of the dissertation was concretized and conceptualized in 1985. The basics of the methodological approach -- a combination of theoretical, qualitative and quantitative analysis -- were also worked out during this time. Another important stop was Washington DC, where I collected data and secondary literature from the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the Library of Congress and various committees and institutes in 1986, as well as interviews with representatives of the National Conservative Political Action Committee (NCPAC), of the Free Congress Political Action Committee and the Gun Owners of America Campaign Committee (GOACC). The data material was evaluated in 1987 in the Institute for Economic and Sociological Analysis of Political Systems and in the Central Institute for Social Science Research (both Berlin)."
