Die politischen Auseinandersetzungen über die Gestaltung der Weimarer Republik, insbesondere über die Anerkennung der Verfassung, fand nicht nur in den großen Städten statt. Der Historiker Helmut Lensing beschreibt den Einsatz des Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold und des Frontkämpferbundes "Eiserne Front" für einen deutschen demokratischen Rechtsstaat in den Landkrisen Bentheim und Lingen. Beide Landkreise könnten unterschiedlicher nicht sein: In der Grafschaft Bentheim waren durch die Textilindustrie viele Kommunisten aktiv, gleichzeitg etablierten sich auch die Nationalsozialisten. Der Kreis Lingen war demgegenüber eine Hochburg des Deutschen Zentrums, aber auch hier entstanden in Folge der innenpolitischen Krisen der Weimarer Repblik antidemokratische Gruppen. Lensing beschreibt die Aktionen von Reichsbund und Eiserner Front.
