Die 1891 gegründete Kaiserliche Schutztruppe für Deutsch-Ostafrika, deren Mannschaften und Teile des Unterführerkorps mehrheitlich aus afrikanischen Söldnern bestanden, ist in dieser Studie Gegenstand, anhand dessen die koloniale Sicherheitspolitik und transkulturelle Kriegführung des Deutschen Kaiserreiches im Zeitraum von 1885 bis 1918 untersucht wird. Schwerpunkte sind dabei die militärische Struktur der Schutztruppe, die Verbindungen zur Kolonialverwaltung, die Kriege gegen autochthone Gegner, die Lehren aus den Kolonialkriegen, die kolonialen Verteidigungspläne sowie die Rolle der weißen Siedler im Kolonialkrieg. Das letzte Kapitel schildert die Situationslage und die Kämpfe zur Zeit des Ersten Weltkrieges in Deutsch-Ostafrika.
