    Content: Mesoscopic systems are prone to substantial fluctuations that typically can not be neglected or avoided. The understanding of the origin and the consequences of these fluctuations (e.g.~for transport measurements) is thus a fundamental part of the theory of mesoscopic systems. We will encounter scale-free fluctuations in different kinds of complex nonlinear systems in this thesis, which consists of two main parts. The first part deals with Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in leaking optical lattices. Experimentalists have achieved an extraordinary level of control over BECs in optical traps in the past decade, which allows for the investigation of complex solid state phenomena and the emerging field of "atomtronics" promises a new generation of nanoscale devices. It is therefore both of fundamental and technological importance to understand the dynamics and transport properties of BECs in optical lattices.
