Grundschulkinder mit Migrationshintergrund und wenig ausgeprägten Deutschkenntnissen sind im deutschen Schulsystem laut PISA-Studien benachteiligt. Ihre sprachlichen Defizite in der deutschen Sprache haben enorme Auswirkungen auf alle Schulfächer, in denen deutsch gesprochen wird. Welche Möglichkeiten ergeben sich jedoch für Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund im Englischunterricht der Grundschule, der möglichst einsprachig auf Englisch unterrichtet werden soll? Stellt dieses Fach eine Chance oder eine weitere Herausforderung für Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund dar? Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, das in den Grundschulen neu eingeführte Fach Englisch vorzustellen und hinsichtlich seiner Bedeutung für Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund zu untersuchen. Ira Lotta Thee verknüpft Ergebnisse der Tertiärsprachenforschung und einer bedeutenden Studie über Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund im Englischunterricht, um Möglichkeiten zum Umgang mit Mehrsprachigkeit im Englischunterricht der Grundschule aufzuzeigen. 〈dt.〉
