Als prominenter politischer Immigrant wurde Thomas Mann seit der Übersiedlung in die USA im Jahre 1938 bis zu seinem Tode 1955 durch amerikanische Sicherheitsbehörden observiert. Aber schon lange vor seiner Exilzeit war er ins Visier der zuständigen Dienste der Sowjetunion geraten. Die Sowjets beobachteten seine vielseitigen Aktivitäten bereits in den Zwanzigerjahren und führten seit spätestens 1946 eine Personalakte über ihn. Das Interesse beruhte auf Gegenseitigkeit, denn Thomas Mann zeigte sich gegenüber der UdSSR keineswegs gleichgültig. Sein Verhältnis zum Staat Lenins und Stalins gestaltete sich als ein Prozess, der verschiedene Phasen – von Furcht und Misstrauen bis zur wohlwollenden Anerkennung – durchlebte. Das vorliegende Buch will diesem eigenartigen Verhältnis auf den Grund gehen. Es basiert im Wesentlichen auf bisher unveröffentlichten Dokumenten aus russischen Archiven.
