La SF française, même si le terme n'existe pas encore ici, connaît son premier âge d'or de 1918 à 1935. Le genre est identifié dès la fin du xixe grâce aux succès de Verne et Wells. Les Anglais l'appellent scientific romance, les Français roman scientifique ou merveilleux-scientifique selon Maurice Renard. Porté par un élan fondateur jusqu'au déclenchement de la Grande Guerre, le genre se relance après, et entre alors dans une période faste où les thèmes classiques sont déployés et raffinés à l'extrême : entités mystérieuses, savants fous, fins du monde, quatrième dimension... 2 500 oeuvres, négligées pour la plupart.
