Ihre Arbeitsorte, Tätigkeiten und Karrieren untersucht Ulrich Thiel auf der Basis einer prosopografischen Datenbank. Im Zuge der Einordnung der Bergakademie und ihrer international tätigen Absolventen in die Entwicklung des weltweiten Kolonialbergbaus geht er u. a. den Fragen nach, als wie wettbewerbsfähig die Spezial-Ausbildung aus Sachsen sich in einem globalen Kontext erwies, wie sich der Wissenstransfer als wechselseitiger Prozess zwischen Freiberg und den Kolonien gestaltete und wie sich die Absolventen in die soziale Hierarchie des Kolonialsystems einfügten.
