In ihrem Buch zeichnet Tetyana Pavlush den Wandel der Holocaust-Reflexion in den evangelischen Kirchen in der Bundesrepublik und in der DDR. Zentral sind Fragen nach dem Anteil der Kirchen am gesamtgesellschaftlichen Lernprozess hinsichtlich des Holocaust und nach der Auswirkung der offiziellen Vergangenheitspolitik auf die kirchliche Erinnerung. Durch vergleichende Analyse der öffentlichen Kontroversen und Gedenktage erfasst die Autorin die Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen den kirchlichen Diskussionen auf beiden Seiten der innerdeutschen Grenze im engen Zusammenhang mit den politisch-gesellschaftlichen Faktoren. Die Auswertung der Stellungnahmen der Amtskirchen sowie der Arbeitsergebnisse von Kirchentagen und evangelischer Presse ergibt ein differenziertes und dynamisches Bild der kirchlichen Erinnerungsarbeit zwischen dem Ende der NS-Zeit und der Wiedervereinigung.
