Nach vierjähriger akribischer Restaurierungsarbeit kommt "Die Nibelungen" dem ursprünglichen "Director's Cut" von 1924 näher als je zuvor. War der erste Teil ("Siegfried") schon in der Fassung aus den 1980er-Jahren relativ komplettiert, wurden vor allem einige verschollen geglaubte Details - etwa Kriemhilds Mordszene - aus dem zweiten Teil ("Kriemhilds Rache") aus einer Rolle mit "Outtakes" ergänzt, die der Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek/Museum für Film und Fernsehen (Berlin) vorliegt. Insgesamt wurde Material aus 17 Einrichtungen in neun Ländern verglichen, um die besterhaltenen Szenen zusammenzuführen. Die eindrucksvolle alte Virage-Technik verleiht dem Film wieder den ursprünglichen orangefarbenen "Stich", der die besondere Licht- und Schatten-Dramaturgie des Werks zur Geltung bringt. So überwältigt "Die Nibelungen" auch 86 Jahre nach der Uraufführung. In jeweils sieben Gesänge (Akte) unterteilt, entwirft der Film ein monumentales Rührstück von unerfüllter Liebe und grenzenloser Rache, von schwülstiger Poesie und destruktiver Megalomanie, von selbstverleugnender Aufopferung und schließlich der berühmten Nibelungentreue, die aus Kriemhild ein gewissenloses Monster macht, das die Burgunder und die Hunnen mit sich in den Abgrund reißt. Von dieser urdeutschen Tragödie griechischen Ausmaßes erzählt auch die Musik von Gottfried Huppertz, dessen Manuskripte wertvolle Hinweise auf den Fluss des Films gaben und die von Dirigent Frank Strobel und dem Sinfonieorchester des Hessischen Rundfunks eindrucksvoll neu eingespielt wurde.
