Oct. 12th 1809. - "The following letter, written by a gentleman of the law, to whom the facts of this case were submitted, has been obligingly handed to me ..."--p. 31-47. Signed: [Blank] Philad. Nov. 11, 1809. - "The following letters were spontaneously addressed by Mr. P. to the chief justice and myself, a few days after the marriage."--p. 6-11. - "To the members of the congregations of Christ-Church, St. Peter's, and St. James's. An affectionate and grateful recollection of the uniform kindness and indulgence which I have experienced from you ... have impelled me to lay before you such information and documents as will, I trust, effectually remove the misconception of my motives, and the misapprehension of my principles upon which I acted, in the celebration of a late marriage. ..."--p. Oct. 27th, 1809. - Although his personal feelings corresponded with the public sentiment that the marriage between William Penn and Catharine Julia Balabrega (described by some as a beautiful but unfortunate girl) was inexpedient and imprudent, Rev. Abercrombie, "finding the marriage invincibly determined on," performed the ceremony, supposing that the celebration "by a regular episcopal clergyman would be less opprobrious in the opinion ... of the public mind, than by a civil magistrate. - Shaw & Shoemaker, 16785
