"Über dem trutzigen Herrensitz der Familie Grieshuus ziehen im 17. Jahrhundert dunkle Wolken auf. Der Lieblingssohn will eine einfache Jägerstochter heiraten, weshalb ihn das Oberhaupt schweren Herzens enterbt, will er das edle Haus doch eigentlich nicht dem habgierigen Zwillingssohn überantworten. Als der verbitterte Hausherr vor Gram stirbt, entbrennt ein Unglück und Tod bringender Kampf ums Erbe, der auch in der Nachfolgegeneration keinen Abschluss findet. Eindrucksvolles Ausstattungsdrama, das inszenatorisch wie darstellerisch exemplarisch das hohe Niveau des Unterhaltungsfilms während der Weimarer Republik aufzeigt. In der emotionalen Wucht an Fritz Langs "Nibelungen" erinnernd, wird die Novelle von Theodor Fontane auf sein blutiges Intrigen- und Rachespiel fokussiert und mahnt im Stil einer griechischen Tragödie den Kampf um das Recht auf Selbstbestimmung (in der Liebe) an. Der Film wurde 2005 restauriert und 2014 mit der restaurierten Originalfilmmusik von Gottfried Huppertz gekoppelt. [film-dienst.de]
