In der Zusammenführung von gesellschaftlichen Betrachtungsweisen und medizinprofessionellen Eigenverständnissen wird die Ambivalenz der Fachdisziplin deutlich, die sich auf die Gleichzeitigkeit von legitimierenden und diskreditierenden Mustern zurückführen lässt.
