'Platform Urbanism' discusses the fundamental transformation of urban space through platform technologies. By reorganizing access to a wide spectrum of fundamental domains, such as education, housing, health care, or even political information, platforms are destined to become the most powerful players regulating the way we live in cities. Digital platforms such as Facebook, Uber, Airbnb and Amazon are not only new types of enterprises but also a completely new culture of life from the products we handle and the services we use every day to entire urban neighbourhoods that will be built by major platform enterprises in the next few years. These multi-scalar changes raise significant questions about the social potentials and risks of the architecture of these all-encompassing ecosystems. Peter Mörtenböck and Helge Mooshammer are Co-Directors of the Centre for Global Architecture, an interdisciplinary initiative established to study the planetary changes affecting spatial production today. Die Kuratoren haben mehr als 50 nationale und internationale Expert*innen eingeladen, Bild- und Textbeiträge, kurze Videos und Podcasts zu verfassen, die im österreichischen Pavillon und auf der Website präsentiert werden. Dabei setzen sie sich mit der Frage auseinander, wer bei Plattform-Urbanismus auf welche Art beteiligt ist und welche alternativen Wege (jenseits von Online-Shopping, Gig-Work und DatingApps) wir mit digitalen Plattformen einschlagen könnten, um ein gerechteres Leben in der Stadt zu gestalten. Von ihren eigenen Wohn- und Arbeitsorten aus haben die eingeladenen Expert*innen von September 2020 bis März 2021 hunderte Blog-Beiträge zu PlattformUrbanismus verfasst, die nun online unter www.platform-austria.org zu lesen sind und im österreichischen Pavillon in einer multimedialen Installation erfahren werden können. Zusätzlich konnten alle diese Beiträge auch als umfangreiche Publikation (Platform Urbanism and Its Discontents, nai010 publishers, 2021) veröffentlicht werden, die den flüchtigen Dimensionen von digitalen Plattformen ein Stück materielle Realität entgegenhält und nun bereits zur Eröffnung des Pavillons vorliegt.
