The emergence of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is described as a process that was based on decades of rapprochement between the partners who formed the KIT in 2009. When the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center was founded in 1956, a collaboration with the Technical University of Karlsruhe began, which led through joint appointments and institutes to a strategic partnership and finally to the merger idea within the framework of the excellence competition of the federal and state governments.
