Content: The widespread notion that Romans hated monarchy (odium regni) ever since the beginning of the Republic runs counter to the many positive connotations they attributed to reges and regnum. This study takes this contradiction as its point of departure and shows how Romans could condemn the idea of royal rule while at the same time maintaining a positive regard for regnum.
