Series Statement: Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie 369
Note: Description based upon print version of record. - This book consists of a comparative study of the locative constituents that may appear in the existential constructions of three Romance languages: 'il y a' in French, 'hay' in Spanish and 'c'è' in Italian. The first part discusses the role of these locatives from a morphological, discursive, semantic and syntactic point of view. The second part analyses the syntactic and discursive behaviour of different semantic kinds of locatives in a large corpus of newspaper articles. It appears that French 'il y a' functions more as a topic-introducing device than as an existential predicate, and to a larger extent than Spanish 'hay' and Italian 'c'è'.
