What is special about protestant counselling? For several years now the role of ethics has become increasingly important in the social discussion. We see this most clearly in the field of medicine, as the limits of life at birth and death are explored. This concern for ethics has also affected the work of councelling. Clients must be supported and helped to make competent decisions not only in a social, emotional or psychological sense, but also in an ethical sense. This has consequences for the training of counsellors, where a trend towards ethics can be observed in councelling theory. It has become clear shat standard non-directive counselling can lead to failure to address ethical problems. This was particularly apparent in pregnancy counselling. Theology is currently offering new approaches for developing the religous and existential dimension of the counselling service.
