Sein Befund: Die Nation entstand nicht aus einer ursprünglichen Einheit, sondern aus dem politischen Konflikt heraus. Der lange Kampf um die politische Repräsentation schuf eine neue Vorstellung von Gemeinschaft. Worin die Identität dieser Gemeinschaft besteht, bleibt in der Demokratie aber immer umstritten. Knapp hundert Jahre nach der Einführung des allgemeinen Wahlrechts und der Volkssouveränität bietet das Buch damit zugleich die erste umfassende Geschichte der «demokratischen Revolution» in Luxemburg.
