Content: The Singapore economy has been pointed in a new direction. Faced with the most serious economic crisis since the mid-1960s run-down of the British bases, the leadership has submitted itself to some surprisingly frank self-criticism. Concluded is that Singapore must throw off the shackles of over-regulation, excessive government-imposed costs and preference for the corporate state over individual entrepreneurship and public over private capital. Discussed are: the long-neglected services that get new attention; the taxation reforms; problems in manufacturing, one of the most important sectors in Singapore; and the high cost of the spurn of new methods of production. Interview with Lee Hsien Loong, minister for trade and industry. - Statistics, 1975-95. (Economische Voorlichtingsdienst)
