Spätestens seit dem Fall der Berliner Mauer galt der Neoliberalismus mit seiner Tendenz zur umfassenden Deregulierung als adäquate Epochenbestimmung. Seit einiger Zeit wird das Bild aber um einige Ambivalenzen reicher: Wirtschaftsfreundliche Regierungen wie in den USA oder Großbritannien kritisieren Freihandel und Migration, Konservative streiten gegen »Political Correctness« sowie für die ungehemmte Meinungsfreiheit und vieles mehr. Scheinbar jenseits der Unterscheidungen rechts/links, progressiv/konservativ erweist sich die Deregulation eng verwoben mit dem Wunsch nach Restauration. Diese ambivalente Figur ist jedoch nicht neu, sondern wird spätestens seit den 1950er-Jahren durch verschiedene intellektuelle Interventionen formiert, deren signifikanteste Facetten in diesem Sammelband vorgestellt werden. Der Band behandelt Texte, die den Blick auf liberale beziehungsweise reaktionäre Konstellationen freigeben, die für neoliberales Denken anschlussfähig wurden: wirtschaftstheoretische Gründungsdokumente,philosophische und politische Interventionen, Staats- und Gesellschaftsentwürfe, technologie- und medientheoretische Schriften, ökologische und postkoloniale Utopien sowie populistische Traktate.
