Ingeborg Bachmann und Ilse Aichinger haben sich im Wien der Nachkriegszeit kennengelernt. Zwei Frauen im männlich dominierten Literaturbetrieb, von unterschiedlicher Herkunft, mit grundlegend verschiedenen Erfahrungen in der NS-Zeit und mit gegensätzlichen Lebensentwürfen werden die bedeutendsten österreichischen Autorinnen nach 1945. Trotz der unvermeidlichen literarischen Konkurrenzsituation versuchen sie, ihre Freundschaft aufrechtzuerhalten. Ihre Korrespondenz aus den Jahren 1949 bis 1962, in die auch Günter Eich als Ehemann Aichingers einbezogen ist, dokumentiert diesen prekären Versuch in rund 100 Briefen - 30 von Bachmann, 74 von Aichinger und Eich. Der auffallend familiäre Ton wird von Aichinger vorgegeben. Für sie, die nahe Verwandte durch die Shoah verlor und in Wien der Verfolgung ausgesetzt war, blieb die Familie das größte zu schützende Gut, in der Bachmann als "dritter Zwilling" und als "kleine Schwester" Günter Eichs ihren Platz erhält. Dass diese Freundschaft trotz aller Bemühungen scheiterte, gehört zur Tragik, die sich in diesem Briefwechsel verbirgt und nur selten hervorbricht, in einem "Suchen, grundlos, krankhaft, nach dem Grund des Ausbleibens jeder Nachricht […] mit dem Wunsch um ein Wort"
