Quel est le rôle de l'isolement dans l'organisation sociale au Moyen Age? La thèse vise à répondre à cette question complexe à partir d'une étude de sémantique historique centrée sur ce que l'on désigne comme le « vocabulaire de la solitude », c'est-à-dire les mots couramment employés avec le terme « solitudo » dans les textes médiévaux. Le parcours proposé permet de repérer des continuités et des ruptures dans la façon dont le monde monastique latin a pu concevoir l'isolement. Mais, afin de mieux comprendre l'enjeu social de la solitude, cette thèse privilégie l'étude de l'un des moments clé de la mise en ordre de la société: le tournant et la première moitié du XIIe siècle (v. 1080-v.1150). Dans la grande variété de formes d'isolement existant au cours de cette période, le modèle des moines chartreux, grands spécialistes de la solitude institutionnelle monastique, s'est imposé. Les Chartreux ont été très vite reconnus par leurs contemporains et par la hiérarchie ecclésiale comme un exemple parfait de vie solitaire ; d'où le projet d'analyser leur façon spécifique de penser la solitude. À travers l'analyse détaillée du vocabulaire et du champ sémantique de la solitudo, il a été possible de montrer que l'isolement participe au discours normatif de l'Église - un discours qui institue une pensée ecclésiologique fondée sur la hiérarchisation des formes matérielles et idéelles de séparation du monde. En somme, cette thèse soutient l'idée que vivre la solitude revient à penser la société, car parler de l'isolement amène souvent les auteurs médiévaux à penser aux façons « salutaires » de vivre ensemble sur Terre, à la fois pour soi et avec les autres

What is the role of isolation in medieval social organization? Our thesis aims at answering this wide and complex question with a study of historical semantics centered on what we called "vocabulary of the solitude": the words often used with the term "solitudo" in medieval texts. During our research we were able to identify continuities and discontinuities in the way how the Latin monastic world conceived the isolation. Towards a better understanding of the social aspect of the solitude we chose to study one of the key moments of the reorganization of the social order in the Middle Ages, namely, the turning and first half of the 12th century (c. 1080-c.1150). In the big variety of forms of isolation existing during" this period, it was imperative to study the case of the Carthusian monks, the major specialists in monastic institutional solitude at the time. The Carthusian monks were early recognized by their contemporaries and by the ecclesiastical hierarchy as a perfect example of solitary life, what encouraged us to analyze the specific way that they conceived the solitude. Through a detailed analysis of the vocabulary and the semantic field of the solitudo, we have demonstrated that the isolation participates on the normative speech of the Church. A speech which establishes an ecclesiological thought based on a hierarchical organization of the material and the ideal forms of separation from the world. In short, we point out that to live the solitude is to think about the society, once to speak of the isolation often makes the medieval authors to think about the appropriate manners to live together on Earth and not about the total abandonment of the world
