Zusammenfassung: "Sechs Werke Alexander Kanoldts, die der Staatlichen Kunsthalle Karlsruhe 2020 von Dr. Stephan Freiherr von Welck geschenkt wurden, stehen im Zentrum dieser Publikation. Zwei von ihnen - die Gemälde 'Bildnis Heinrich vpm Welck' (1922) und 'Kreuzjoch' (1931) - hatten eine besonders wechselvolle, hier nachgezeichnete Geschichte. Sie sind Zeugnisse eines mehrfachen Unrechts, wurden sie doch 1946 von den Behorden der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone (SBZ) konfisziert und später ins Staatseigentum der DDR überführt. 1969 verkaufte die DDR die Bilder zur Devisenbeschaffung in den Westen. Über den Kunsthandel gelangten sie in budesdeutsche Museen. Nach langwierigen Verhandlungen wurden sie 1985 bzw. 2009 an die Familie von Welck restuiert. Der Entzug von Kulturgut in der SBZ bzw. DDR war bislang ein Randgebiet der Provenienzforschung. Der vorliegende Band der Reihe Spurensuche beleuchtet einen einen exemplarischen Fall. Eine biographische Studie ist Heinrich von Welck gewidment, der mit Alexander Kanoldt befreundet war. Kanoldts Entwicklung vom Karlsruher Akademieschüler zu einem maßgeblichen Maler der Neuen Sachlichkeit ist Thema eines kunsthistorischen Beitrags." -- Abdecklappe
