Es geschah in den frühen Morgenstunden des 7. Oktober, Samstag, Sabbat. Um 6:00 Uhr durchbrachen etwa 2500 Kämpfer der von der EU, Großbritannien, den USA und Israel als Terrororganisation eingestuften Hamas im Gazastreifen an 30 Stellen unbehelligt den Grenzzaun zu Israel und verübten in nahegelegenen Orten und Kibbuzen und einem Musikfestival ein Massaker. Ohne auf großen Widerstand zu stoßen, töteten sie 1400 Israelis und verschleppten 240 als Geiseln. Es war das schlimmste Blutbad in der Geschichte Israels. Um das Massaker in den größeren Rahmen des Nahostkonflikts einordnen zu können und um zu verstehen, warum der Nahe Osten »die gefährlichste Region der Welt« ist, wie es US-Außenmister Kissinger 1975 einmal zutreffend formulierte, muss man allerdings weiter zurückblicken. Das soll dieser Beitrag leisten.
