Im zeitgenössischen Musiktheater wird das gesellschaftliche Verhältnis von Frau und Mann häufig thematisiert. Dabei wird mit herkömmlichen Imaginationsformen von Weiblichkeit und Männlichkeit experimentell umgegangen. Adriana Hölzkys Bremer Freiheit und Wolfgang Rihms Die Eroberung von Mexiko befassen sich besonders intensiv mit dem Geschlechterkonflikt und entwickeln dabei zukunftsweisende Perspektiven. Während Hölszky sich eines sachlich-zeigenden Gestus bedient, entwirft Rihm allerdings mit wirkungsästhetischen Mitteln eine androgyne Utopie. Anhand einer Gegenüberstellung beider Werke zeigt diese Studie exemplarisch-induktiv aktuelle Strömungen des heutigen Musiktheaters auf und liefert dabei zugleich einen Beitrag zur Geschlechterforschung.
