Das Buch erscheint anläßlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung in der Berliner Akademie der Künste. Es dokumentiert und interpretiert die Entwicklung des Sprechtheaters in Deutschland von 1945 bis 1990. Die Geschichte des Theaters in beiden Teilen Deutschlands wird lebendig vor dem Hintergrund der unterschiedlichen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen. Dies wird veranschaulicht anhand von Stationen, die geprägt wurden von Theaterleitern und Regisseuren: Gründgens, Brecht, Kortner, Langhoff, Besson, Hübner, Noelte, Stein, Peymann, Müller, um die wichtigsten hervorzuheben. Die Texte begreifen diese Stationen aus heutiger Sicht, aus der Perspektive der überwundenen Spaltung, aber auch mit viel Sinn für die Eigenart und Einmaligkeit der jeweiligen Situationen und der Tatsache der immer vorhandenen wechselseitigen Wahrnehmung über den Eisernen Vorhang hinweg.
