Der belgische Autor (Jahrgang 1958) des vorzüglich übersetzten Buches (Originalausgabe 1997, also vor N. Finkelstein und P. Novick, beide BA 5/01), Philosoph und Soziologe, war längere Zeit Mitarbeiter der Fondation Auschwitz in Brüssel, ist derzeit mit Forschungsauftrag an der Universität Louvain tätig und hat schon vielfach zu Einzelthemen im Umkreis dieses Buches publiziert. Dass er ein ernst zu nehmender Fachmann in Sachen Holocaust, Auschwitz und Judenvernichtung ist, gilt es zu bedenken, weil Chaumont hier das immer wieder umstrittene Thema der historischen Singularität der Shoa diskutiert, Fragen stellt, Antworten sucht und gibt. "Wenn die Shoa einzigartig war, welcher Platz bleibt dann für das Leiden der anderen?" Solche Fragestellung mag falsch sein, wenn sie von außerhalb jüdischer Sicht kommt. Wer aber wie dieser Autor mit solchem Ernst die Debatte aufnimmt, hat ein Recht gehört und zur Kenntnis genommen zu werden. Umfangreiche Bibliographie. Keine leichte Lektüre, aber wichtig.
