Lewis, britischer Altmeister der Orientalisten, hat sich in seinem Werk immer wieder mit der Begegnung von Orient und Okzident, dem gegenseitigen Einfluß der Kulturen beschäftigt (vgl. "Der Atem Allahs", zuletzt BA 4/02, oder "Kaiser und Kalifen", ID 7/97). In diesem Band, der auf einer Vorlesungsreihe, die Lewis 2001 in Wien hielt (veröffentlicht als "Kultur und Modernisierung im Nahen Osten", hier nicht rezensiert) sowie auf früheren Veröffentlichungen seit 1980 beruht, beschreibt er, wie und warum das Osmanische Reich seit dem Ende des Mittelalters seine Vormachtstellung einbüßte und durch eine enorm dynamische Bewegung mit der zunehmenden zivilisatorischen Überlegenheit des christlichen Westens konfrontiert wurde.
