Als 1961 "Die Zimtläden", die Kindheitserinnerungen des ostpolnischen Schriftstellers und Zeichners Bruno Schulz (1892-1942) erschienen, waren sie eine literarische Sensation (BA 149, 38; Neuausgabe ID 32/92). Heute gilt er als einer der herausragenden europäischen Schriftsteller. Der Schulz-Forscher Ficowski (1924-2006) erzählt von diesem tragischen Künstlerleben in Galizien (Schulz wurde 1942 von einem SS-Offizier auf offener Straße erschossen). Er hat biografische Informationen, Glossen und Fotos zusammengetragen, die spärlich genug erhalten geblieben sind. Er betont, subjektiv ausgewählt und über "seinen" Schulz geschrieben zu haben. Das Buch ist eine gelungene Mischung aus Biografie und Analyse, wobei das Werk dankenswerterweise nicht, wie der Autor betont, einer "Vivisektion" unterzogen wird. (2)
