In seiner "green philosophy" sucht er vielmehr den einzelnen zu motivieren, selbst nach ökologischen Lösungen zu suchen. Zentraler Begriff seiner Argumentation ist die Oikophilie, die Liebe zur und dem Gespür für Heimat, in deren Gefüge nachbarschaftliche (Umwelt-)Initiativen entstehen können. Unter der Überschrift "Bescheidene Vorschläge" beschreibt er als Ziel der Oikophilie: "Bedingungen ... schaffen, unter denen die Menschen ihre Umwelt im Geist der Treuhänderschaft selbst verwalten können, und politisches Handeln dort möglich ... machen, wo der 'kleine Haufen' es alleine nicht schafft."
