Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht mit theoretischen und praktischen Methoden die Frage der Autorschaft und der Originalität im Design. Dabei dient insbesondere der Umgang von Möbelherstellern mit sogenannten Modernen Klassikern des Möbeldesigns als Untersuchungsgegenstand. Im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung steht eine Recherche zu der bislang wenig erforschten Entwicklungsgeschichte der Tischgestelle von Egon Eiermann. Die Arbeit soll damit einen wissenschaftlichen Beitrag zur Entwicklungsgeschichte der sogenannten Eiermann-Gestelle bieten. Design wird in diesem Rahmen als eine variationserzeugende Tätigkeit definiert, die stets dazu tendiert, Bestehendes zu verändern. Design steht damit in einem spannungsreichen Verhältnis zu dem Begriff der Originalität, da jedes Redesign erneut die Frage der Autorschaft aufwirft, was insbesondere dann kritisch wird, wenn der ursprüngliche Autor eines Designs verstorben ist. Im Rahmen dieser Untersuchung spielen rechtliche, ästhetische, materielle und ideelle Aspekte eine Rolle.
