Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1784-1817) gehört zu den herausragenden Persönlichkeiten der Stadt Basel. Seine Kindheit verbrachte er im Haus zum Kirschgarten. Unter dem Namen ‹Scheich Ibrahim ibn Abdallah› bereiste er zwischen 1809 und 1817 im Auftrag einer britischen Forschungsgesellschaft den Nahen Osten. Seine Fähigkeiten, sich in fremde Kulturen einzuleben und dennoch objektiv über sie zu schreiben, macht ihn zu einem einzigartigen Zeitzeugen arabischer Kulturen. Burckhardts Reiseberichte und Beschreibungen der Beduinen wurden im 19. Jahrhundert zu wichtigen Quellen für die Kartografie und Ethnografie. Heute ist er vor allem als (Wieder-)Entdecker der nabatäischen Felsenstadt Petra und des grossen ägyptischen Tempels von Abu Simbel bekannt. Noch bevor er seinen eigentlichen Auftrag - die Erkundung der Gebiete zwischen Nil und Niger - erfüllen konnte, starb er im Alter von 32 Jahren in Kairo. Das reich illustrierte Buch gibt Einblick in das Leben dieses faszinierenden Forschungsreisenden und lässt ihn mit einer grossen Auswahl von Zitaten aus seinen Briefen und Schriften auch selbst zu Wort kommen.
