Komar and Melamid, who have collaborated since the 1960's, emigrated to the U.S. from the Soviet Union in the late 1970's. "Symbols of the Big Bang" reflects a departure from their past projects which were Satires of Soviet socialist realism. Now, for the first time, the artists have created a series that explores their personal spirituality. These works encourage viewers to experience the mystical healing power of age-old symbols like the Star of David. Through large-scale paintings on canvas and drawings on graph paper, the artists seek to bridge the gap between the scientific Big Bang theory and stories of creation.
