Nach dem von ihr bevorzugt gekochten, sehr scharf gewürzten indischen Gericht "Tandoori chicken", wird sie "Mama Tandoori" genannt. Niemand kommt um sie herum, immer fungiert sie als die zentrale Adresse. Mit eisener Hand regiert Mama das Leben ihres Mannes, eines Arztes, und ihrer drei Söhne, von denen der Älteste geistig behindert ist. Ihre Hilfsmittel sind dabei das Nudelholz, Pantoffeln und andere Wurf- und Wortgeschosse, mit denen sie ihrer Familie und diversen anderen Menschen ihren Willen aufzwingt. Liebe- und begriffsvoll zeichnet van der Kwast das Leben seiner beiden Familien. Einfühlsam beschreibt er die Tragik von Mama Tandoori, ihren Sammelzwang, ihre Jagd nach allem was billig oder kostenlos ist und ihre immer kleiner werdende Hoffnung auf eine "Genesung" ihres ältesten Sohns Ashirwad. Der Autor ist ein meisterhafter Erzähler, der eine große Leserschaft ansprechen wird.
