Am 24. Februar 1956 rechnet Chruschtschow auf dem XX. Parteitag in einem geheimen Referat mit den Verbrechen Stalins ab. In Moskaus Satellitenstaaten geraten bisherige Dogmen ins Wanken und die Handlanger Stalins, die die Sowjetisierung in ihren Ländern vorangetrieben haben, unter Druck. In Ostberlin erklärt Walter Ulbricht lapidar, Stalin sei kein Klassiker mehr und will zur Tagesordnung übergehen. Abermals formiert sich breiter Widerspruch gegen die SED-Führung. Doch noch bevor in der DDR eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Stalinismus beginnen kann, rollen im Herbst 1956 sowjetische Panzer in Ungarn ein und beenden das kurze Tauwetter im Ostblock.
