Der Artikel beschäftigt sich mit den Gebietsansprüchen der Volksrepublik China im Südchinesischen Meer. Zunächst beschreibt der Autor die dortigen Territorialkonflikte und blickt speziell auf die umstrittenen Spratly-Inseln, wo China eine extensive Landgewinnung durch Aufschüttungen betreibt. Der Verfasser blickt dabei auf die bislang erfolgreiche chinesische "Salamitaktik" im Inselstreit, die am Ende fast das gesamte Südchinesische Meer umfassen könnte. Anhand des Einsatzes des Lenkwaffenzerstörers USS Lassen in einem von China beanspruchten Seegebiet erklärt der Verfasser die strittigen seerechtlichen und völkerrechtlichen Auffassungen zwischen den USA und China in Territorialfragen und der Freiheit der Meere. Schließlich blickt er auf die politischen und militärischen Implikationen der chinesischen Außenposten im Südchinesischen Meer. Der Verfasser bilanziert eine zunehmende internationale Sorge über die angespannte Lage im Südchinesischen Meer und spricht sich für eine Neugestaltung der sino-amerikanischen Beziehungen aus.
