Content:
Friedrich I von Hohenstaufen (ca. 1122-1190), deutscher Kaiser, genannt "Rotbart" oder "Barbarossa", gilt bis heute als archetypisches Beispiel eines autokratischen Herrschers und Imperators. Zudem erzählt die Sage, er würde im Kyffhäuser auf sein neues, erst noch kommendes Reich warten. Von seinen späteren Nachfolgern der Jahre 1871-1918 als adäquates Nationalsymbol herangezogen, vernebelte sich allerdings der öffentliche Blick auf den realen historischen Herrscher stark. Der Film versucht nun die Rekonstruktion seiner Biografie auf Grundlage wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse und zeichnet ein weit weniger mythisches Bild, sondern das eines begabten Realpolitikers seiner Zeit.
