Der Katalog erschien anlässlich der gleichnamigen Ausstellung im Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Fondation Corboud in Köln (2008/09). Die ausgestellten Kunstwerke werden in hochwertigen Farbbildern dokumentiert und in begleitenden Texten erläutert. Hinzu kommen 12 thematische Essays und eine Doppelbiografie für jedes Künstlerpaar mit Illustrationen. Das Werk präsentiert Kunst schaffende Paare von der Renaissance bis in die Gegenwart mit Schwerpunkt 20. Jahrhundert. Das Spektrum reicht von Claudel und Rodin über Modersohn-Becker, Gontscharowa und Larionow, Werefkin und Jawlensky, Taeuber-Arp, Delaunay-Terk, Münter und Kandinsky, Höch und Hausmann, Kahlo und Rivera, O'Keefe und Stieglitz, Krasner und Pollock, Eames, bis de Saint Phalle und Tinguely. Das Werk bietet faszinierende Einblicke in die Entwicklung der Beziehungen, die Lebensumstände der Paare und die gegenseitige Beeinflussung in der künstlerischen Arbeit. Deutlich wird, wie vielgestaltig die Modelle des Zusammenlebens und -arbeitens vor dem Hintergrund des gesellschafts- und sozialpolitischen Wandelns sein konnten.
