Das Ballett Clavigo basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Trauerspiel in fünf Akten von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, welches er 1774 erstmals unter seinem eigenen Namen veröffentlichte. Roland Petit nahm dies als Grundlage und erzählt die Schreckensgeschichte eines willensschwachen Verführers, dessen aufrichtige Liebesbeziehung zu Marie ein trauriges Ende findet. Die Tragik der Handlung wird mit Hilfe des abstrakten Bühnenbilds von Jean-Michel Wilmotte, der den Raum durch graue, weiße und schwarze Tafeln strukturierte, und der dazu kontrastierenden Kostüme von Luisa Spinatelli wirkungsvoll zum Ausdruck gebracht. Gabriel Yared komponierte für Clavigo eine Musik, die überwiegend an der Lyrik und Dramatik der Rolle der Marie festhält und entwickelte ein Thema, welches im Verlauf des Balletts in drei Variationen wiederkehrt. "Als Roland Petit mich bat, die Musik für sein Ballett zu schreiben, habe ich zuerst den Clavigo von Goethe gelesen, um den Geist des Stücks zu erfassen.", meinte der Komponist. (Arthaus Musik)
