Following the devastating and powerful "The Times of Harvey Milk", director Rob Epstein partnered with Jeffrey Friedman to create another Oscar-winning documentary . We only get a glimpse of stories like Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic athlete and organizer of the Gay Games, or 11 years old hemophiliac David Mandell, Jr or gay activist Vito Russo. But the frustrations that are detailed by the film are only equaled by the heartwarming stories narrated by Dustin Hoffmann. The quilt (if you didn't already know), is pieced together as a representation of all the tragic losses the disease of AIDS has taken from society. The quilt itself is an poignant choice of title, being such a visible tool of narration. One cannot help but grieve and become sympathetic by listening to the un-doctored footage. A hard film to rate, and a difficult subject matter to contemplate over, but utterly essential. (Gary Tooze)
