6 DVD set with Seventeen Moments of Spring (also Seventeen Instants of Spring) is a famous and extremely popular 1973 Soviet-Russian TV series. The story is about the activities of a Russian WWII spy, Maksim Isaev, operating in Nazi Germany under the name Max Otto von Stirlitz. The plot is driven by Stirlitz's (eventually successful) attempts at obstructing negotiations between SS General Wolff, representing Schellenberg and Himmler, and the USA intelligence operative Dulles in Switzerland during the final episode of WWII. Dulles is interested in reaching a peace agreement with Germany that would leave many Nazi institutions in place as to prevent the rise of communism in Western Europe. The film owes its astounding success to director T. Lioznova's many-year painstaking work, writer Y. Semyonov's suspense-packed plot, the brilliant performance by the actors and M. Tariverdiev's score. (Moskwood)
