Maguni is a bullock cart driver, who has won the hearts of the people of Khalikote township. One day the news spread that people would no longer ride in Maguni's cart, because the Singh family plans to ply a motor-bus in the town. When Maguni heard this he laughed smug in the knowledge that people would not desert his cart for the bus. However, people did prefer the bus, much to Maguni's grief. Maguni woke hours earlier, to have his cart ready and waiting before daybreak, but people still took the bus. Maguni and his beloved bullocks were reduced to starvation. And then one day, the townsfolk had to force open the door of Maguni's mean little hut to recover his corpse. (Covertext)
