Die Gerichtsverhandlung, Aburteilung und Hinrichtung der Jeanne d'Arc. Carl Theodor Dreyer arbeitet in seinem berühmten Stummfilm vorwiegend mit Großaufnahmen und mit sparsamen, mathematisch kalkulierten Kamerabewegungen; die Zwischentexte sind den Prozeßakten entnommen. Der Film ist kein Historiengemälde, keine Chronik der Ereignisse, kein Passionsspiel, sondern die distanzierte Beschreibung eines Glaubenskampfes, bei dem Blicke, Gesten und Körperhaltungen die innere Anspannung aller Beteiligten ausdrücken. Ein trotz seiner analytischen Struktur bewegender Film, der bei der Uraufführung 1928 in Paris Proteste der katholischen Kirche auslöste.
