Universitäten und Städte waren im Laufe ihrer Entwicklung immer eng miteinander verbunden. Die ältesten Universitäten, d. h. die ersten Korporationen von Magistern und Scholaren, entstanden in den expandierenden europäischen Städten des hohen und späten Mittelalters, im Zuge eines demographischen, ökonomischen, sozialen und intellektuellen Auf- und Umbruchs, der in der Mitte des 11. Jahrhunderts begonnen hatte. Von Anfang an war das Verhältnis zwischen Universität und Stadt zugleich spannungsvoll und symbiotisch. Die räumliche Zuordnung der Universität begründete ihren besonderen Charakter, und der Name der Stadt ging bereits früh auf die Universität über. Wie hat sich die gemeinsame Geschichte über die Jahrhunderte entwickelt? Der Autor geht dieser Frage anhand folgender Schwerpunkte nach: Frühere Konflikte zwischen Universität und Stadt - Die Städte und die Strukturen der frühen Universitäten. (HoF/Text übernommen)
