    Content: Autonomie von Individuen und Gruppen gegenüber dem Staat und die Existenz einer kritischen Öffentlichkeit nennt der Autor als unabdingbare Merkmale einer Demokratie. Beides war in der chinesischen Republik vor 1949 gegeben, allerdings nicht mit den politischen Folgen wie in Europa. Beide Phänomene führten nur zu partiellem Druck auf die Regierenden. Mit den Demonstrationen in Peking 1989 wurden gesellschaftliche Traditionen aus der Zeit vor 1949 wiederholt. Diese könnten, nach Meinung des Autors, allerdings durch die aktuellen Probleme der chinesischen Regierung in Zukunft weitaus mehr Dynamik entfalten als damals. (BIOst-Rsg)
