-- "From 1900 to 1918, Weimar played a special role as a »place of identification for German culture«. As under the burning glass, the aesthetic and cultural-political confrontations condense here, and the intellectual armament can be observed in the context of the nationalization of the arts. From Harry Graf Kessler to Fritz Mackensen, from Henry van de Velde to Ernst von Wildenbruch and from Ernst Haeckel to Rudolf Eucken - they are all (un) voluntary participants in the "War of the Spirits" in Weimar. This history of art, culture and mentality is diversified and backed up with evidence of the times: from paintings, graphics, posters, photographs, architectural and sculptural works to literary propaganda, public calls and field mailings. The exhibition and accompanying volume ask central questions about German identity and thus refer to debates that are still current."
