Ein Pole kommt in den letzten Kriegsmonaten mit einem Transport aus Auschwitz ins KZ Buchenwald, in seinem Koffer einen kleinen Jungen, ein Judenkind, dessen Eltern in Auschwitz umgebracht wurden. Der Versuch der Häftlinge, es zu verbergen, stürzt die Häftlingsverwaltung wie auch die kommunistische Widerstandsgruppe in schweren Zwiespalt. Trotzdem entscheidet sich keiner gegen das Kind. Die Verfilmung des Romans von Bruno Apitz (1958) um einen Konflikt, der die perfide Unmenschlichkeit des nationalsozialistischen Regimes mehr entlarvt als lautstarke Anklagen, war der erste deutsche Film, der den Alltag in einem Konzentrationslager skizzierte. Trotz leichter ideologischer Verzeichnungen ist er stets um Authentizität bemüht und verdichtet die Geschehnisse zu einem vorzüglich inszenierten und gespielten Drama von außerordentlicher humaner Qualität. - Sehenswert ab 14.
